FTMS College has been providing both professional and academic programmes since its inception in 1986. One of Malaysia's longest established private institutes, its strengths are in accounting & finance, business and computing disciplines.
FTMS offers degree programmes from UEL, a university with a reputation for innovation.
Aside from professional programmes such as ACCA, CIMA, CAT and CFA, the college offers diploma programmes in business and computing, and collaborates with UK universities for the local delivery of degree programmes in computing.
FTMSGlobal has schools located in city centres in Hongkong, Brunei, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Mongolia, Uganda, Somalia and Malaysia. This city centre concept ensures that students are close to the commercial and business world, and have easy access to the campus by different forms of public transport.
In collaboration with the University of East London (UEL), FTMS now delivers two specialised UEL degree programmes: the BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering and BSc (Hons) in Computer Games Technology.
Rated among the top 10 modern universities for research, UEL is a dynamic university with a reputation for innovation and diversity. Positioned at the cutting edge of cultural and technological change, UEL develops programmes of teaching and research that are practical, innovative and relevant.
The Software Engineering degree addresses an aspect of computer applications that has been of concern for quite a while, which is the quality of software produced and the regularity of software being delivered late and over budget.
The degree provides the skills and knowledge for the development of sound and user-friendly software applications by emphasising the importance of following a methodology fully, ensuring that project estimation is realistic, monitoring the project progress, thoroughly testing the software and involving the user throughout the development process.
The world video games market is growing at about 20% a year. Computer game development, a synthesis of technical skills and creative talent, has gone from being a cottage industry of the 1980s to a vibrant global industry. Worldwide, computer games are now a US$28 billion industry, bigger than the movie industry. It has matured to include advanced technologies from software engineering, computer programming, computer graphics, animation, and even artificial intelligence.
In a move to cater to this new niche market, FTMS College has launched the UEL BSc (Hons) in Computer Games Technology.
The programme is part of an ongoing response to changes in the discipline of computer science and its emerging application in the game industry.
In the past, game developers used to enter the industry with little more than an ability to learn programming and a real enthusiasm for games. But today, the game industry requires many more skills, and courses like computer games technology play an important role in supplying the needed skills.
This programme provides students with a comprehensive education in all aspects of computer games design, programming and technology.
It aims to develop professional and transferable skills in a wide range of methods, techniques and practices appropriate for the tasks domain of a professional computer game developer. It also aims to provide students with an education and learning experience that will equip them to operate as autonomous computing professionals.
Graduates will be able to gain employment within the computer industry, the multimedia industry or the computer games industry as multimedia designers, web application developers, project managers, animators or consultants.
The next intake for the degree programmes is Sept 8. Enrolment is currently under way.
For those who would like to study but find that the cost is beyond their budget, FTMS will assist with the application for a study loan. For those with good academic results, scholarships are available.
Loan applications supported include those made to Mara, PTPTN, Maju Institute of Education, Malaysia Communication & Education Foundation and banks.
FTMS is a contributor to and supporter of both The Star Education Fund and the Sin Chew Education Fund. Would-be students can apply to these organisations for scholarships.
FTMS also has its own scholarships which are based on academic achievements whereby successful applicants may be given up to 100% scholarship.
For more information on the UEL degrees, visit the FTMS campus at 24-30 Jalan Hang Kasturi or call 03-20509595. Counsellors are available from 9am to 8pm (Mon - Fri) and 9am to 5pm on weekends for personal counselling.

IF you are interested in the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) courses, then the Financial Training and Management Services (FTMS) College is one place you want to check out.

Vietnam, HTV Channel 9, Lord Mayor of London Visits FTMS Vietnam, 5th May 2007
FTMS featured on the evening news (7:50pm to 7:55pm), Channel 9 of HTV, Vietnam.
English Translation:
While Vietnam is on the way to integrating with the world's economy, education and training is playing a more important role in reinforcing the capacity of the accounting and auditing sector in Vietnam.
At the Workshop of Education & Training and Professional Certificates in Ho Chi Minh City during the visit of Lord Mayor John Stuttard, Mrs Nguyen Phuong Mai, Country Manager of the British Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Vietnam said that in order to have a fair financial economy which is adaptable to the regional and global economy, it is necessary to have a force of highly professional and fairly auditors. Vietnam is taking strong steps towards integrating with the international economy, and demand for manpower in the auditing sector will rise in the coming period. ACCA wishes to cooperate in the long term and bring great opportunities to the confident auditors when integrating with as well as entering the regional and world's markets. To help Vietnam in building the supply of international auditors, since 1997 ACCA has organized international auditing courses taught by professionals and those who have important roles in audit in many countries over the world. The challenge in the beginning years was to get people to understand the importance of training courses for professional accounting. ACCA has organized many workshops to introduce students to the difference between professional and academic courses, and to help them develop analytical and practical skills to answer exam questions and to apply the knowledge to actual work, to improve English communication skills and working styles in the professional environment. The success of the program can be attributed to the strong support from international accounting and auditing companies. Based on actual need of the businesses, ACCA Global formally set up offices in Vietnam to easily support the training of international accounting and auditing workers, meeting the demand of the accounting & auditing sector in Vietnam. During this event, 30 audit students at FTMS Centre, a professional school hosting ACCA courses, had the chance to meet and discuss with Lord Mayor John Stuttard about the London Financial District, the leading financial district in the world.
"Vietnam is developing very fast and strongly. More and more business and investment opportunities result in the fact that the demand for highly qualified manpower in auditing is growing. To have qualified auditors, it is most important to have methodical training. ACCA is one of the most famous certifications in the world and is accepted in many nations. I advise that any Vietnamese who wants to succeed in accounting and finance and to have job opportunities in many countries should strive to become ACCA members. It is the professional passport for the Vietnamese to enter the world market."
ACCA Vietnam currently has 181 members, 37 members-to-be, and 1500 students. ACCA's effort will support the Vietnam economic development by training highly qualified accounting and financial professionals, reinforcing the strong development of the Vietnamese economy.

Studying Game Technology, CompuTimes Section of New Straits Times, 7th Nov 2005
The article about FTMS in "CompuTimes" section of New Straits Times. |
THE computer games industry is a growing arena. In fact, the industry has grown to become one of the world's largest entertainment fields.
In 1999, it was reported that the computer games industry had passed Hollywood box-office receipts in terms of annual turnover. And the world's video games market has been growing at 20 per cent each year, totalling up to a US$28 billion (RM106 billion) industry today.
All these developments do not just translate into the creation of business opportunities, but more importantly, it opens up a new line of career for game enthusiasts in the field of computer games development.
In a move to cater to this new niche job market, FTMS College has launched a diploma in Computer Games Technology for post Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students up to 24 years of age.
According to the college's academic head Sajilal Divakaran, the diploma programme is part of an ongoing response to changes in the discipline of computer science and its emerging applications.
"The programme provides students with a comprehensive education, skills, and learning experience in all aspects of computer games design, programming and technology," he says.
Sajilal says the programme also aims to develop professional and transferable skills in a wide range of methods and practices appropriate for the task domain of a professional computer game developer.
He says computer games technology is one of the most exciting sectors in the digital content arena.
"It's a synthesis of technical skills and creative talent, and has become a vibrant industry," says Sajilal.
The launch of game platforms like Sega Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox have brought computer games into a burgeoning industry.
In the past, he says, game developers used to enter the industry with little or more than an ability to learn programming and real enthusiasm for games. But today, the game industry requires much more skills, and courses like the computer games technology should play an important role in supplying the needed skills.
Commenting on the job opportunities that are available for holders of computer games diploma or degree, FTMS College's academic manager Trevor Ward says the opportunities are growing.
"Even though the computer games development industry in Malaysia can be considered still non-existent, the job is getting popular in countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, the UK, and US," he says.
"As the ICT industry grows to many branches of technology, people now are more interested in getting specialised ICT education like computer games development," says Ward.
"These students can also have the opportunity to work with foreign game developers," he adds.
Ward says students taking the computer games development studies need not worry about not getting jobs once they graduate.
"They can easily enter the IT technology arena like software engineering or other technology-related jobs as they are also taught other computer studies like programming, computer architecture, Web development, computer animation, Java programming, etc," he explains.
The opportunities are not just limited to the games industry but also other areas. "Graduates would be able to suit themselves into areas such as multimedia software industry, edutainment, virtual reality, electronic publishing, interactive TV development, and multimedia authoring," he says.
Elaborating on the diploma course, Ward says it covers three years with 10 months of study for each year.
For the first year, students will be exposed to the foundation of computer studies, business, and computing. While in the second year, they will go further into software engineering, project management, and multimedia.
In year three, they will be studying three-dimensional graphics and animation, and build their own computer game as a project.
Ward adds that students who feel that they cannot proceed with the course after one year or want to move into other areas may also do so because they have just learn the basic things.
He says some of the lecturers for the course are people working in the game development industry in Singapore. "So the students will get up-to-date information and skills available in the games industry," he adds.
The diploma in Computer Games Technology by FTMS is offered at RM19,000 for a complete course, but for the first intake, the college is giving an introductory price of RM15,000.

"Critical and Creative Grads" article in Star New Paper, Sunday, 10th July 2005
Critical and creative grads BY ZECH PHARAMOND
Sajilal: Lecturers must prove they can deliver. |
IT'S NOT unusual for tourists to walk into FTMS Global. Located just opposite the culture, arts and crafts hub "Central Market" the school's reception area resembles a comfortable hotel lobby complete with concierge desks.
"We designed the school to look very professional. We didn't want students walking into a sterile looking environment. In fact, each of our five floors has a different theme," says academic head Sajilal Divakaran, FTMS which stands for Financial Training Management School is an education group with centres in the United Kingdom, Uganda, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore and Brunei.
It is also one of the largest providers of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) courses in the world and has been awarded the ACCA premier registered status.
The ACCA website states that premier registered status carries enhanced recognition and is available to tuition providers which offer a specified range of courses, prepare submission documents in accordance with ACCA's requirements and undergo a pre-registration visit.
Among the requirements it must meet are the appointment of a designated member of staff to deal with ACCA enquiries, the preparation of detailed lecture plans showing ACCA syllabus coverage during the course, ensuring that students are able to contact tutors within normal office hours, ensuring that tutors have access to up-to-date ACCA manuals for each paper, holding annual ACCA course reviews and achieving pass rates which meet the premier worldwide pass rate criteria.
FTMS in addition provides an e-learning platform for ACCA courses www.FTMSonline.com that gives students from all over the world online access to internationally renowned accounting qualifications. From this website, students can download audio, text and notes relevant to their studies.
FTMS has also received recognition from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants through its Learning Through Partnership scheme. The award recognises the high standards of teaching and learning at the school, and its commitment to provide flexible delivery to meet the needs of employers and students.
Currently, there are four schools at the Kuala Lumpur centre: the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, the School of Professional Accounting and Finance, the School of English and the Business School.
To add value to the two-year diploma courses, students in computing studies undergo an extra six months of specialisation in topics like networking and database or software engineering. Popular specialisations include computer games technology and computer engineering.
"We have had numerous companies that come here to conduct interviews. I think this is good because it shows the students what qualities employers look for," Sajilal comments.
FTMS sources for lecturers from all over the world including India, Singapore and the United Kingdom. They are industry professionals who are not only qualified on paper but also have a passion for teaching and sharing their knowledge.
FTMS does not believe in spoonfeeding its students. |
"Our lecturers go through six months of probation and must prove they can deliver the course material effectively. We also give preference to those who have Master's qualifications," he adds.
Sajilal says the most important thing is to develop critical thinking in students. In his experience, most new students expect tobe spoonfed lecture notes. Some can memorise whole books and are able to quote the page number of where the information is located.
"There is so little critical thinking. I think students need to strengthen their mathematics to help develop their problem solving and reasoning skills. I have met programming students who tell me they are scared because they have difficulty figuring out their algorithms which need a lot of logical thinking," Sajilal says.
Sajilal is very encouraged when he receives news that his students furthering studies overseas are able to compete against their peers for top honours.
"Other than experiencing an initial culture shock, our students are able to adjust well. Academics wise, most lecturers overseas are impressed with their work,'' he says.
"We have a well stocked library as well as comprehensive online resources which students use for research. We want to train them to be independent," Sajilal explains.
But that message also needs to reach parents or guardians who are financing the students. Sajilal says they too need to understand that it is not that teachers are lazy when they ask students to compile their own study notes.
FTMS graduates have access to PACT International, a company which provides human resource consultancy services. Besides running its own business, PACT also links alumni members to potential employers.
FTMS' School of English ensures that the college's graduates not only possess technical skills but are also competent in English.
There is a placement test for all students to determine their language proficiency. Depending on their abilities, the school will help students enhance their English for academic purposes and professional pursuits.
FTMS also ensures its students have access to state-of-the-art facilities including projection systems, multimedia capabilities, smart boards, Internet links and video conferencing for its classrooms and lecture theatres. The computer labs are also equipped with the latest iMacs, computers and workstations.
FTMS is a contributor to the Star Education Fund.

"PELUANG 'KAKI GAME' DAPAT IJAZAH SARJANA MUDA ": Computer Games Technology article in Berita Harian, Singapore
Oleh
Shamsul Jangarodin (mahasiswa Nus)
Nilainya dianggarkan mencecah AS$100 bilion ($172.2 bilion) dalam abad mendatang.
